Trump again calls to buy Greenland after eyeing Canada and the Panama Canal today

President-elect Donald Trump has reignited his interest in acquiring Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory, citing national security concerns. This follows his previous, unsuccessful attempt during his first term. Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Bourup Egede, responded firmly, stating that Greenland is not for sale.

In addition to Greenland, Trump has suggested that the U.S. should retake control of the Panama Canal due to increased shipping costs. Panama’s President, José Raúl Mulino, rebuffed this idea, asserting Panama’s sovereignty over the canal.

Furthermore, Trump humorously proposed that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state, a remark dismissed by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Analysts suggest that these proposals may be strategic moves to secure concessions from the respective nations. However, they have been met with swift rejections, highlighting the complexities of international relations and national sovereignty.

Trump’s Renewed Interest in Greenland and Other Territorial Proposals

This morning, Greenland’s prime minister hit back at Donald Trump, telling the public that “Greenland is not for sale.” Prime Minister Mutes B. Egede made these comments in local Greenland news.

These comments come after Donald Trump nominated Ken Howery as the next ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark, and in his announcement post, he wrote that the United States should take ownership and control of Greenland.

Specifically, Trump wrote that “for purposes of national security and freedom throughout the world, the United States feels that ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”

Greenland is an autonomous community of the Kingdom of Denmark. The Danish government told Trump in his first term that Greenland is in fact not for sale, causing Trump to cancel a state visit to Copenhagen.

Donald Trump is now renewing his public request to buy Greenland, even though the community’s prime minister is rejecting his call, as will the Danish government.

Since winning the presidency, Trump has worked to destabilize relations with a variety of countries, including Canada, Mexico, Panama, and now Denmark. Trump has threatened to make Mexico and Canada part of the United States, take ownership of the Panama Canal, and now annex Greenland. Greenland’s prime minister doesn’t approve of this.
